Different types of waxes are incorporated in lithographic, screen, gravure, & flexographic inks. They also
find use in some carbon paper, typewriter ribbon, metal decorative and magnetic inks. These waxes
impart mar, rub and scuff-resistance, and improved slip and water repellency properties. Small additions
of wax are also known to reduce tack without affecting the flow properties of letterpress and lithographic
inks.
Rub resistance characteristics are dependant on the particle size, hardness and melting point of the wax
added to the ink formulation. FINAWAX, fatty amides, migrate to the surface of the ink by forming a thin
layer. The presence of FINAWAX at the surface of the dried ink film reduces the scuff by decreasing the
coefficient of friction.
FINAWAX additives improve the slip of flexographic inks. This property is very important when printing
on plastic surfaces, which ensures that the coefficient of friction over the printed area is similar to that
over the non-printed area, leading to better surface finish and easier processing. FINAWAX-E has been
found to be most effective for this application. FINAWAX-O increases the hydrophobicity of the off-set
lithographic inks, giving a sharper printed image.
FINAWAX-S is useful in the over-printing and wet-printing of papers. This property is important when the
printed surface is to be coated with a varnish or lacquer. Coating with conventional waxes may not
adhere over the ink and may result in a non-continuous, defective film. This is also true in applications
where a second ink instead of coating is used for over-print.
FINAWAX-S increases the body and improves appearance by better ink lay. It reduces the crawling at the edges of the ink and prevents cracking or chipping of the ink. Low percentages of FINAWAX-S does not effect the gloss of the inks.

FINAWAX-O is used as an adhesion promoter and slip agent in polyamide-based inks especially on
polyethylene films for food packaging. Use of 2% FINAWAX-O (on ink) at the grinding stage in offset inks
helps to reduce emulsification. It should be added to the resin base and wetting agents are not required.
FINAWAX additives like FINAWAX-O and FINAWAX-S are used as solubilizers, wetting agents, stabilizers for oil-in-water emulsions and ink transfer improvers. They also find applications in dot-matrix ribbons, printer toners and as wax components of ink jet inks. FINAWAX additives are used to give slip and silky feel in inks used for printing beverage cans and metal bottle tops.
